Our school's science curriculum is inquiry-based and hands-on. Grades K - 5 utilize
Full Option Science System (FOSS) and
Science and Technology Concepts (STC) kits to engage students in fun, hands-on science lessons. Inquiry-based learning is an educational practice in which students seek answers to their questions through active, hands-on involvement with curricular concepts and materials. For example, instead of reading a textbook, listening to a lecture, or watching a movie that provides pertinent information about levers and pulleys, students work with materials to build and experiment with lever and pulley systems, allowing them to gain a better understanding of the concepts.
Project Approach
The project approach is a method of teaching in which an in-depth study of a particular topic is conducted by a child or a group or children. Children study a topic that is interesting to them and on their level. The teacher acts as a facilitator. The approach facilitates integration between subject areas and allows students to relate home and school learning. Children are expected to work cooperatively on complex and open-ended tasks as well as follow instructions in step-by-step learning. The project approach provides one way to introduce a wider range of learning opportunities into the classroom.
